Advent Angel and the Elementals Puppet Play

The Advent Angel and the Elementals

A Puppet Play for the Second Advent Sunday

Table is set with a scene conveying a garden. Small plants around. Some greens and mosses. On a table close by is the crèche, in a setting still rather bare with more green boughs, the rocks, crystals and shells from last week and a few green plants. Red apples (real and artificial may decorate as well as some red ribbon. The Advent Wreath may be present on/ in the Garden or on a separate table.

Narrator

Dear children and families, friends and relations, welcome to the second Advent Sunday Garden. Here is a little play about a time long, long ago, about two thousand years ago. Our beautiful earth was suffering from the cruelty of Mankind. And Humankind was suffering because we had forgotten our Heavenly birthright and who we really are in God. So the Son of God was sent down to the Earth to remind human beings of who we really are and to help us turn away from ways that bring us pain and make us forget how to love each other. He came to bring Love back to human hearts, the Divine Love of God that heals us, makes us happy and teaches us how to love each other as the Angels and Archangels love us, no matter what we do.

This beautiful Child, the Christ Child, who was born so long ago in a humble stable in Bethlehem came to teach us how to love the Divine Father and the Heavenly world again and how to love each other as we love ourselves. For if we love God and each other, we could never want to do or say anything that would be hurtful to anyone else or to ourselves.

Each year, the time of the Christ Child’s birth comes again. And in truth, He is born again every year in our hearts. Every year we must make ourselves ready to receive Him again and to prepare our homes and our souls to house and nurture Him. As we love our families and friends and prepare gifts, good food and fun things to do to make each other happy, we can feel that we are doing these things for the Divine Child who lives among us. So let us begin together to prepare for His coming, for the Advent of His Birth into our lives once again.

It is said that before the time of the Christ Child’s birth, the Plant Kingdom was the second to wake up, to be aware of His imminent approach. Today it is three weeks before Christmas and the Earth and her plants and the elementals, the fairies, already feel the approach of the Divine Child. The elementals of the Earth, the Sun Fairies (sometimes called Salamanders), the Air Fairies (called Sylphs), the Water Fairies who are Undines and those creators and protectors of the roots of the plants, the Root Gnomes – once suffered with Mankind as we lost our power to love each other. Perhaps this is how they learned that Love was coming back to the Earth, to bring rebirth and healing to the seeds, the roots, the blossoms and the fruits and through them to Mankind.

Two mobiles, one of fire and air fairies and one of water fairies

and root gnomes circle to the left of the scene.

They float around a sick looking plant.

The Fire Fairies say –

The sunlight now is dwindling! Our fires need kindling!

The Air Fairies say -

The wind is not blowing! The breeze is not flowing!

The Water Fairies say -

The waters are drying! The plants are all dying!

The Root Gnomes say -

The roots are all weakened! Our Earth now is sickened!

The Second Advent Angel appears (from viewing left) –

green robe with angel tunic and wings

                        Sings -

From the forest bring the boughs,
of fir and spruce and pine!
Bring them home, bedeck the house,
for now it's Advent time!
Bring the boughs,
bring the boughs,
for now it's Advent time!

She stops and comes slowly closer to the fairies who pause a bit.

Advent Angel

Greetings dear Fairies from Heaven on High

I heard you lamenting as I was passing by

Whatever is the matter, what grieves the fairies so?

If there is a way to help you, please just let me know.

The Fire Fairies say –

Greetings dear Angel from Heaven on High

We heard your sweet singing as you were passing by

Our fruit we would give you to sweeten your way

But our fruit will not ripen in bright sun of day.

The Air Fairies say -

Our joy from your song is now tempered and lessened

By our grief and despair for the Earth’s lost her blessings

Our flowers we would give you to brighten your day

But our sweet blossom fragrance has dwindled away.

The Water Fairies say -

Our leaves we would give you for health and for food

But wither they quickly in meadow and wood.

We carry the water but can’t find in them

The power for healing in leaf and in stem

The Root Gnomes say -

The Earth now is dying, it’s dry and it’s cold

The plants all are weakened, the roots cannot hold

Our plant world is sickened, the plants grow so weak

Some help from the Heavens now we do seek.

Advent Angel

I hear you dear Fairies of Fire and of Air

I have news to tell you to, so do not despair

I hear you dear Fairies of Water and of Earth

The tides are now turning, there comes a new birth

A new seed is planted in pure Virgin soil

Whose roots will not wither, whose leaves will not coil

This wondrous plant is a new kind of Rose

That will blossom in midst of the midwinter snows.

Come see this apple, the fruit of the land

From this tree there beckoned the tempter of man

Which wakened the knowledge of evil and good

Before time appointed to be understood.

Much pain engendered in the garden of bliss

Yet always a promise was hidden in this

For see here a star lying deep in its heart

Where seeds of new life are now ready to start

And see here the blossom, the Heavenly Rose

Its five lovely petals the apple now shows

There always did live a divine promise of God

That someday mankind would return to the Good.

The Root Gnomes say -

Will the roots grow again long and deep in the ground

And feed from the good Earth the strength they once found?

The Water Fairies say -

Will water then flow pure and fast through mountain and dale

And give our dear plants what they need to help heal?

The Air Fairies say -

Will breezes blow gently and open the blooms

Which will fill with their fragrance the halls and the rooms?

The Fire Fairies say –

Will the trees and the bushes again fill and give

The fruits, nuts and berries to feed all that lives?

Advent Angel

Yes, of course dearest Fairies, Earth will blossom once more

The fruit will be sweeter than ever before

Leaf, stem and root will be filled with new life

And feed all who hunger for peace from their strife.

Yes, you are right, the Earth has been dying

Since humankind first turned to evil and crime

But no matter how far they turn from the Heavens

All will be rescued by love and in time.

There soon will be born for the world a good Savior

The Christ Child is coming, so come and take heart

His time soon approaches, so come and make ready

To welcome Him, come let us make a new start.

The Root Gnomes say -

Where is this seed then, oh Angel we ask

Come, let us plant it in Earth, that’s our task

The Water Fairies say -

We swell with the feeling of wanting to water

This new seed, so please bring it, heavenly daughter

The Air Fairies say -

We’ll whisper so gently to waken this seed

Whose blossoms give comfort to all those in need

The Fire Fairies say –

We’ll ripen it fast with our sun swords of light

And bring it to harvest with fire’s own might.

Advent Angel

Dear Fairies, I thank you for making this space

But this rose is planted in a secret place

The time for its sprouting is almost at hand

And with it a new life will spread through the land.

The Christ Child is coming, about to be born

And a radiant new Sun will appear on that morn

A new wind of change will blow through the world

And banners of hope will soon be unfurled.

The oceans of green and the waters of blue

Will flow through world with healing anew

The trees will grow tall on their mighty new roots

And new grains will ripen again on their shoots.

New seeds will be carried in each loving heart

And the Garden of Paradise will have a new start.

So come, bring your gifts to the place very near

And wait for the Christ Child who soon will be here.

Narrator

And so with the Advent Angel to lead them, the Fairies came to the humble stable in Bethlehem. They worked very hard to make sure that the plants around the inn bore good fruit for the Mother and Child and that the water in the well was pure to drink. They carefully prepared fragrant roses to bloom, even in the midwinter cold as a special gift in honor of the new life that the Christ Child was to bring into the world. And from that time, the apple has been redeemed. It is a promise that the mistakes and errors of Mankind will all be corrected, forgiven and wiped away by the Son of God and that Roses of Love will blossom wherever evil once made barren. Let us then bring our Apples and Roses our living plants and evergreens to the Advent Garden to fill it with fairies once again.

Candlelighting

In the second candle of Advent shine
The plants and the berries on the vine,
The green grass and the lovely tree,
And all the flowers that we see.
Now the plants are on the earth,
Waiting for the Christ Child’s birth.

Advent Angel

(speaking to the Advent Garden and plants placed there)

“I am the Second Advent Angel! Spread over all the Earth is a living mantle of Plants. From the tiniest lichen to the tallest Redwoods, I call upon you plants to Wake Up! The Turning Point of Time is upon us! Fill your living essence of fragrance and nourishment with the Holy Light of the Stars. Wake up and Rejoice, O Plants!”

From the Forest Bring the Boughs

From the forest bring the boughs,
of fir and spruce and pine!
Bring them home, bedeck the house,
for now it's Advent time!
Bring the boughs,
bring the boughs,
for now it's Advent time!

Light the candles one by one,
count off the days in rhyme,
Ev'ry day a task well done,
for now it's Advent time!
Ev'ry day a task well done,
for now it's Advent time!

On the hearth a fire lay,
of oak and yew and pine,
Drive the winter chill away, for now it's Advent time!
Drive the winter chill away, for now it's Advent time!

Tune the fiddle and the flute.
Oh, let the music chime!
Sing we all, let none be mute,
for now it's Advent time!
Sing we all, let none be mute,
for now it's Advent time!
